Google GenUI Helps Teachers Create Custom STEM Simulations

Google Research has developed a generative user interface system that allows educators to instantly build customized, interactive STEM simulations tailored to their specific curricula.

Google Research has introduced a new system that leverages generative user interfaces (GenUI) to help educators design custom, interactive simulations for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects. Built on Google's LearnLM—a family of generative AI models fine-tuned for education in 2024—and drawing on the 2025 Learn Your Way experiment, this technology dynamically constructs user interfaces without requiring manual coding. To demonstrate the system, Google has released a public library of over 30 English-language learning interactives for middle and high school students.

The generation process relies on strict pedagogical guardrails and self-correcting loops to ensure quality. When a teacher inputs a topic, the system generates precise learning objectives and structures the simulation into progressively difficult game levels. It automatically produces scaffolding, including formulas, tiered hints, and worked solutions. To guarantee these elements function correctly, an agentic auto-evaluation process opens a Chrome browser instance to test the simulation, performing adversarial actions like pushing controls to extreme values. The loop repeats until the interactive meets all quality criteria.

In an initial study, 12 teachers in the United States tested the system by requesting three custom interactives each, resulting in an average quality rating of 8 out of 10. A separate group of STEM teachers in the United Kingdom also evaluated the tool, rating the physics and chemistry simulations particularly high. For classroom practitioners, this development addresses a long-standing limitation of static, off-the-shelf educational software. Instead of using rigid pre-made tools, teachers can now differentiate instruction by generating highly targeted simulations that align perfectly with their daily lesson plans.

Google is now expanding this research through the Google for Education Pilot Program. Participating schools can request custom STEM simulations tailored to their specific grade levels and curricula. New interactives will only be added to the public library after undergoing direct teacher validation and approval.
