The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is turning to artificial intelligence to address its persistent air traffic controller shortage. The agency plans to deploy a cloud-based software program called SMART, which stands for Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories. Developed by the technology firm Air Space Intelligence, the contract for the software is valued at $875 million over a 12-year period.
SMART is designed to integrate with and enhance the FAA's existing air traffic management infrastructure. The platform leverages AI to analyze a wide array of real-time operational variables, including airline schedules, weather patterns, airport capacity, airspace conditions, and various operational constraints.
